About once a week I grab my laptop and head to a caf to work, brainstorm, and map out business plans. I usually enjoy a latt, cappuccino, or green tea while I work and I’ve found the change of scenery ignites my creativity and jump starts my productivity. For years I’ve gone to the same caf on Yale Avenue for my weekly ritual, but last week I stopped into a Barnes & Noble Cafe. I approached the counter to purchase a latt and the sales person immediately responded with an “up selling” offer. She asked, “Can I get you a slice of cheesecake to go with your Caramel Macchiato?”

I wasn’t even thinking about dessert, yet I somehow let the unexpected query: “Can I get you a slice of cheesecake to go with your Caramel Macchiato?” entice me into accepting a rich slice of cheesecake.

The lady at the Barnes & Noble Caf flawlessly executed the “up-selling” technique and without any hesitation I accepted. Not once in the three years of my attending my usual caf has anyone tried to upsell me. As I enjoyed each delectable bite of the cheesecake I wondered, “What would it mean to Barnes & Noble’s bottom line if every salesperson in the Caf attempted to upsell beverage seekers? What would it mean to the bottom line if just 2% of customers everyday were upsold?” What would it mean to your bottom line if every one of your employees flawlessly upsold your customers?

In my experience both as a consumer and as a Business Growth Strategist, I have discovered that many businesses avoid up-selling because they’re concerned that the customer may feel irritated or pressured, and often customer service professionals are reluctant to upsell because they’re uncomfortable with a “selling” role. But here’s the thing: If you don’t try to upell you are 1) Leaving money on the table and 2) Withholding value-added services from your customers. When done right, upselling offers translate into sales 5-20% of the time. And research shows that most customers appreciate up-selling when they are offered additional benefits that are relevant to their needs. Read on to get 5 tips to help you confidently and successfully upservice your customers.

Think of upserving as “Up-Servicing” – When done right, upselling is simply offering a “suggestion” to an already receptive buyer to enhance the value of her service. This is exactly what I experienced at Barnes & Noble Cafe. I was already a receptive buyer and the cheesecake most definitely enhance the value of my experience. When viewed as truly upservicing as opposed to upselling, selling doesn’t feel so overwhelming.

Make sure your upserving offer is always relevant to the customer’s needs. Offering a buyer of a latt a book on Feng Shui tips may not be relevant and is likely to be rejection waiting to happen. But offering dessert truly offers to enhance the receptive customer’s experience.

Be more interested in being of service than in getting a commission. Always focus on offering products or services that are relevant to the customer’s needs and will arguably enhance the customer’s experience. If your sole objective is to get a commission, customers will smell you a mile away. And trust me, they will not buy.

Recognize that upservicing increases customer satisfaction. Surveys and research has found that offering products your customers might find useful is a proactive effort on your part that conclusively leads to increased satisfaction and loyalty.

Think of “up-servicing” as a proactive service initiative. When you add upservicing to your skill repertoire, you will increase customers satisfaction and grow your bottom line.

Big Ticket to Wealth, Carbon Copy Pro, Passport to wealth, Wealth Masters International, EDC-Gold and Liberty League

 I will break each of these companies down in a way that you can understand them. I will first start with Carbon copy pro. I tried Carbon Copy pro just from the beginning and you have to purchase a $49 video just to read a little about the company. I received this video, “Inside Out”, in the mail and watched each excerpt. I still have it on my desk sitting in the corner. This is a break down of Carbon Copy Pro. M1 sells for $1995, M2 sells for $8995, and M3 sells for $19995, and you can also expect to pay over $100.00 a month for this service. Carbon Copy Pro pours large amounts into advertising. They want you to pay the $8995 for the home business which they call Wealth Masters International or (WMI). Once you get to that level you will need to have a $2000 to $5000 budget for advertising budget. Now with the $19995 I will not even go into that because most people can not afford to pay that kind of money to start an internet business. Now you can make your decision on this opportunity.

The next company I will tell you a little about is Passport to Wealth. Passport to wealth has an Australian compensation plan called a 2 up system. Where they got this idea from is the insurance and securities industries because both of these are very direct, powerful, and simple. Their magic number is 3. With this number you must send up your first 2 sales and you finally get to collect your first monies from your 3rd sale. With this sale that is where your downline starts. If this is for you to pass up your first two sales then you may want to try passport to wealth.

The next company I will tell you about is called Liberty league. You will receive a three cd set, a workbook, journal for writing in, and a few other items to place in your hands and a small carrying case. The program is a self guided tour of you. With Liberty League you have two plans on which you can join. First of all you have an enrollment fee of $49 which allows you to become an associate and to get qualified for your commissions you will have to pay $1520. Liberty league also uses a two up program, which still means you must send up your first 2 sales before you even make any money back. After your third sale you finally qualify for your commissions and now your cost is up to $3520. After that you must attend two conferences which are called Liberty which will cost you $8000 and Summit will cost you $13000. With Liberty League you need five sales to start making money.

The next company I will discuss is EDC Gold or Earn Daily Cash. EDC is also a 1 or a 2 up system. You have to pass up your first 2 sales which cost you $997 each which is $1994 to the person that got you in to the program and at that same time you loose those prospects. You also have all of the hosting, and administration, and the reoccurring monthly fees. You will not make the money as described in the other opportunities.

Now with the last company that I will tell you about is Big Ticket to Wealth. With Big ticket to wealth you have three different entry levels. The first level is $797 which is the National Level, the second level $1197 which is the Executive Level, and the third level is $1997 which is the Presidential level. With the first level you send your sponsor and his sponsor $300 each and the remaining goes to administration. With the second level you will send your sponsor and his sponsor $500 each and the remaining to administration. With the final level you will send $900 to your sponsor and the same to his sponsor and the remaining to administration. With these different levels you will also have residual monthly income from them. The reason this is called a matching override is because you receive from you downline the same as your sponsor, so since your sponsor is getting the same as you are he will be there for you with any question you may have. Your sponsor will never leave you hanging because if you are making money so is he. You also have the help from our CEO Gerald Van Yerxa.  Let’s look briefly at a few network marketing scheme questions and answers. I’ve heard the whispers, you probably have, too. Things like that’s one of those pyramid schemes, or even the dreaded moniker: Ponzi scheme. Not to be confused with a Fonzi scheme, which refers to saying heeeeeyyyyy and hitting the juke box while you wink at a cute girl.

Seriously, let’s get into what people mean when they say: It’s a network marketing scheme.

What’s in a name?

First, what does scheme mean?

From thefreedictionary.com, Scheme means:

1. A systematic plan of action.

2. A secret or devious plan; a plot.

3. An orderly combination of related parts.

4. A chart, diagram, or outline of a system or object. (Similar to a schematic.)

Simple, right?

Only one of these has any negative connotation, #2. Hard to be positive about a devious plan or plot. Of course, you can take almost anything negatively if you want.

So what separates network marketing from a pyramid scheme or Ponzi scheme? Mainly one simple thing:

- The Network marketing business, also called multilevel marketing or MLM, is a legal form of business for the sale of products and services. The objective is to sell product and build a legitimate business.

- Illegal pyramids or Ponzi schemes have no product or a sham product, but try to portray a legitimate business. An example being Bernie Madoff’s hedge fund collapse in 2008, and many others. Note that Madoff passed himself off as an investor, but didn’t in the end he wasn’t investing.

5 Items To Check

While not a comprehensive list, these 5 should be strong indication of legality or not. If you see any funny business, start asking questions and talking to lawyers. Here are 5 items to check:

1. What does the company sell? Is it a real product or service?

This cuts to the chase quickly. If the company sells a real tangible product or service and you can prove it, you have eliminated probably half the problems.

2. Transparency: Does the company follow the rules?

For example, does the company provide an income disclosure statement? One of the things that sunk Enron and Arthur Anderson – regular companies, who employed thousands – was faulty accounting. They cooked the books.

All legal network marketing schemes – and by that I mean companies – must provide an income disclosure statement to new distributors. It tells you what people at different levels of the company earn. You can find many of these online, too.

3. Are other products like yours selling for similar prices?

Look at make-up and perfume for an example on this one. You can get make-up, like eye shadow, foundation, and perfume at your grocery store, or you can go to Neimann Marcus for them. The prices will be wildly different, but both acceptable and legal.

Also, look at juice prices. Some MLM companies sell juice for $70 per quart. Wow! But it’s organic, it’s imported, it’s rare, or hard to process. These are pretty good reasons. It reminds me of wine prices: $10 per box, or $100 per bottle.

The point: can you find other products for prices in a similar neighborhood to yours that aren’t part of the network marketing business. If you can’t, then maybe you should steer away.

Now if you are selling a cookie for $25, you may run into trouble, especially if you don’t have a good reason for the price, such as superior ingredients or high overhead for your location. No one sells cookies for that price.

This can be called a product-based pyramid, where the product just covers for a way to move large sums of money. Also illegal.

4. What do you get paid to do?

In an illegal pyramid, you get paid to bring people into the scam. Sometimes people call these giving circles, or birthday clubs.

In good businesses, you earn money for selling products or services. A good, solid network marketing business will live for years selling products to people. An illegal pyramid will die immediately without new recruits. And take your money with it.

5. Ethics

Nothing substitutes here. If you work with good people, you get better results. What kind of ethics do you see in the people in this business? Beyond all the income other people may tell you they make, can you trust them? Do they follow the rules, or do they push people to buy more than they can resell or use?

And when you ask how the business works, do you get a straight answer? For instance, we sell pre-paid services for this industry. Or, we sell nutritional supplements. If they can’t explain it, find someone who can or move on.

By the way, if the answer sounds like: “we all give money to Fred, bring in 10 people, and when it’s our turn we get a sack full of hundred dollar bills,” you should probably leave. There’s no product, you get paid to bring people in, and eventually the people on the bottom get nothing.

Final Notes

No one can guarantee you success in network marketing or anything, really. You must take responsibility for your actions and be careful where you invest money and time and heart.

By calling it a network marketing scheme, people try to demean it.

Is your current business opportunity a network marketing scheme? If by scheme you mean a systematic plan or an orderly combination of related parts, then probably. Is it a devious plot or illegal? Not usually. I buy from several companies that have been around for years and have great products.

To buy, I am signed up in some of these companies, since I get a discount. Kind of like being a member at Sam’s Club. But I only promote one as a business opportunity at this time.

Check out the companies you look at seriously. Go to a meeting or two, look closely at the products. Call the home office or go on a tour there if you can. I have at a couple. Go to a big convention.

These are reasonable precautions to take. By the way, don’t invest money over the phone, either, unless you have checked it out first. Remember, no one can sell you the Brooklyn Bridge, and millionaires in Nigeria don’t really need you to put their money in your bank account

1) Network marketing lead generation cannot be left to others. If you want to guarantee yourself the best leads, untouched by others and targeted then you need to be generating them yourself. You have to forget buying leads because they are expensive, will burn a hole in your pocket and in a nutshell, most are unresponsive.

Buying leads means you have no control how they were sourced or whether others have already used them. Are they fresh? Are they targeted? Are you likely to get a “mouthful of abuse” when you contact them because you are the fifth (or the nth) person to call them lately about a business opportunity. This would surely not produce a positive out come on your business.

2) Relationship building is a vitally important step in a network marketing lead generation process. There is absolutely no way to put relationship building on the automatic button. It may be done in the near future but cannot be done today, more so if you are still starting out.

Relationships can only be built on trust. And trust must be earned and not bought or imposed. Your people will look to you for guidance and teaching. There is no way something like this can be fully automated.

In a sense, the interactions you make with your downline, whether they are face to face, by phone or email are the glue that will keep your foundation from crumbling to the ground.
